The Independent Police Complaints Commission said the procedure was carried out yesterday afternoon as part of the ongoing investigation into his death after he was tasered by police while visiting his father in Trench, Telford, on Monday.

It comes as a charity which supports former footballers said it had been contacted by Mr Atkinson's family shortly before his death.

Xpro was set up to help former professional footballers who have found the transition to normal life a difficult one.

Geoff Scott, chief executive officer of the charity, said the call was logged and put into a diary for a follow-up call but said it is important people do not speculate too much on Mr Atkinson's state of mind.

Mr Scott said it is common for the charity to be contacted by concerned family members, rather than the player themselves.

He said: "His niece contacted us a few months ago because Dalian had been admitted to hospital under the accident and emergency department. There was very little we could do at that stage because our normal work in the medical area is for people who have footballing or sports related injuries. Because this didn't fall within that area there was nothing we could do.

"We had been in touch with Dalian. We hadn't heard from him for a couple of weeks and like everyone else we were surprised and shocked to hear of the events in the early hours of Monday."

Mr Scott said that Xpro had now been in contact with his family and had offered them support following Mr Atkinson's death
