One arrested after fire at The Buttermarket nightclub in Shrewsbury

A man has been arrested after a fire at the Buttermarket nightclub in Shrewsbury.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward following a fire at at the rear of the club on Howard Street during the early hours of Sunday morning.

The fire happened between 4.30am and 4.35am, when a small explosion is reported to have occurred at the rear of the property.

Police and fire services attended and the blaze was quickly extinguished.

An unknown man was seen near a storage area behind the building shortly before the explosion and investigating officers would like to speak with him as he could have useful information.

He is described as a white man, wearing a white shirt and dark coloured trousers, and is believed to have left the area in the direction of the car park.

Det Sgt Lee Holehouse of West Mercia Police said: "We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen any suspicious activity.

"I particularly urge the man seen nearby to contact us as he may have important information that can help us with our enquiries into the cause of this fire.

"Anyone who has information can contact West Mercia Police on 101, quoting incident number 159s of August 14."

A 20 year-old man from the Shrewsbury area has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.
