Traffic was stopped on both the eastbound and westbound carriageways shortly after 1pm, forcing many motorists to wait on the motorway and others to divert on nearby roads.

Some drivers trapped near the incident on the M54 were released at around 3pm before the road fully reopened at 4pm with long tailbacks.

A West Mercia Police spokesman said: "The M54 has now been re-opened in both directions between junctions 6 and 7.

"This follows a closure earlier this afternoon after we received a report of concern for the welfare of a woman at approximately 1:15pm.

"The situation has now been safely resolved. Many thanks to those affected for their patience and understanding."
