Emergency crews and an air ambulance were called to the A49 between Condover and Dorrington, at 10.50am.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said this afternoon: "Crews arrived to find a car that had suffered significant damage in the collision, with a man and woman inside, both in cardiac arrest.

"Bystanders were already carrying out CPR which ambulance staff took over.

"However, despite the best efforts of everyone concerned, it sadly became apparent that nothing could be done to save either patient and they were confirmed dead at the scene.

"The driver of the lorry, a man, was treated for the effects of shock and discharged at scene."

The road was closed between Dobbies Island, Meole Brace, and Marshbrook, near Church Stretton.

Two fire engines including the rescue tender were sent to the scene from Church Stretton and Shrewsbury. An operations officer was also in attendance.

A spokeswoman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue said: "We were called to a road traffic collision at Dorrington between a car and a tanker."

Along with the fire service the ambulance service and the police attended the accident."

Traffic was queuing on all approaches to the area, with delays of an hour in on the A5 from Preston Roundabout and 30 minutes from the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital roundabout towards Dobbies.

The road was expected to remain closed for most of the day and police were urging motorists to take alternative routes.

This afternoon Shropshire Council said: "It's looking like the A49 will be closed for some time, and into evening rush hour this evening, unfortunately due to fatalities involved."

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash. Call West Mercia Police on 101 quoting incident number 0216S of July 1, 2016.
