'Someone will die' warning over Bridgnorth boy racers

Boy racers are plaguing Bridgnorth town centre, it has been claimed, with one senior councillor warning someone will be killed if they are not stopped.

Bridgnorth Town Council will write to West Mercia Police expressing concerns after councillors spoke of problems on the High Street and Cartway at a meeting last night held in the mayor's parlour.

The meeting was told cars were travelling at speeds of well in excess of 30mph and were causing a "great deal of anxiety" for elderly residents in the town.

Councillor Val Gill, a former mayor of Bridgnorth, said she asked for the item to be put on the agenda after complaints from residents.

"I had a phone call from a member of the public," she said.

"This person had experience of going into town, particularly on a Friday, and complained of boy racers on the High Street and going down into Cartway.

"I don't know what we can do about it or where we take it, whether we liaise with police.

"But it is causing a great deal of anxiety for this elderly gentleman and other people who are going into town for meetings and such like."

Councillor Graham Mountcastle, who lives on the High Street, said he was well aware of the problems.

"I live on there, and there are not many nights when you don't see or hear cars coming flying along the road," he said.

"It is young kids mainly, but they are going well over 30mph.

"It only wants someone to come out from the town hall at the market end at the wrong time, and they will be killed. Something needs to be done."

Current town mayor, Vanessa Voysey, received the backing of councillors after suggesting writing to police expressing the council's concerns on the issue.

Town clerk Anne Wilson was also asked to write to Shropshire Council asking for better signage on Cartway after concerns were also expressed about people using the road, which is access only, as a rat-run.
