Police officers carrying out searches for Mr Downes found the body of a man at around 10.25am today in dense woodland near to the A5 in Shrewsbury.

Formal identification has not yet taken place but Mr Downes' family has been informed.

West Mercia police said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

It was revealed yesterday that Mr Downes had been on bail for conspiracy to murder a police officer.

He was last seen near Hereford Road in Shrewsbury last Saturday and was reported missing on Monday.

He was on bail from Northern Ireland after pleading not guilty to conspiracy to murder a police officer.

The charges related to an incident in north Belfast in May 2013 when pipe bombs were thrown at a police car.
