The fire closed the westbound carriageway between Junction 2 for Wolverhampton and for Albrighton at about 9am, with hundreds of motorists getting stuck in the area.

The vehicle was carrying amusement arcade equipment and was completely gutted in the blaze.

BBC Shropshire journalist Alex Seftel, who was caught up in the delays tweeted:

A spokeswoman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue said: "The initial report came in at 9.04am and we sent fire crews from Albrighton as well as two from Staffordshire to the scene of the fire which was between Junction 2 and 3 of the M54.

"A light goods vehicle was found to be well alight and crews used four breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to bring the fire under control."

The fire was out by 9.52am and the carriageway was reopened by 10.25am.
