Crews kept busy by spate of Shropshire grass fires

A blaze in a hollow tree was tackled by firefighters as a series of grass fires took place.

A Hodnet crew tackled the tree fire in Peplow, near Market Drayton, at about 1pm yesterday.

Firefighters were also called to four grass fires across Telford in just two hours yesterday afternoon.

The first broke out at Queen Elizabeth Way in Malinslee just after 3.30pm and destroyed 100ft of grass and undergrowth.

Just 10 minutes later another fire involving gorse and undergrowth broke out at Spout Way. A third was reported at Hawksworth Road, Central Park just after 4.30pm.

And at 5.25pm crews tackled a grass fire near a footpath between Spout Way and Matlock Avenue, Dawley.

About 10 metres of grass and undergrowth were involved.
