Around 200 tons of wood near Apple Tree Lodge in Marton, near Welshpool, was engulfed during the inferno yesterday.

Fire crews were alerted to the blaze shortly after 11.30am.

Appliances from Minsterley, Bishop's Castle, Shrewsbury, Llanfyllin and Welshpool attended. Crews tackled the fire using breathing apparatus and hose reel jets.

Richard Ewels, a spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "We were asked to attend the scene to assist with traffic control on nearby roads while the fire officers work to prevent the fire spreading to nearby farm buildings."

A spokeswoman for Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service said crews eventually put out the blaze at about 5.30pm.
