A man in his 70s was treated for smoke inhalation after the blaze at a bungalow in Ruyton-XI-Towns.

More than 20 firefighters battled the fire at the semi-detached home in School Road at about 4am, which destroyed much of the roof.

Brian Welti, watch manager at Baschurch Fire Station, said an elderly couple were alerted to the blaze by smoke alarms and managed to escape before firefighters arrived.

The fire started in the attic and firefighters are carrying out investigations into how it started.

Three neighbours rushed outside to help the couple.

Mr Welti said: "The couple woke up and managed to get out safely.

"When we arrived there was smoke and flames through the roof. We contained the fire to the upstairs and prevented it going into the neighbouring property. It is fortunate they had working smoke alarms."

Steve Parry, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said: "We treated one male in his 70s for smoke inhalation at the scene."
