The man in his 50s suffered serious burns to his face and hands after escaping the fire in his living room and is being treated in hospital. His dog died in the fire.

The blaze broke out in the semi-detached bungalow in Western Avenue, Whittington, near Oswestry, just before 7.30am.

It destroyed the bungalow, although firefighters managed to save the adjoining dwelling. They say they believe the man had been sleeping on the sofa.

Watch manager, Ade Bowen, said: "The blaze was so fierce we could see the flames from the Oswestry bypass a couple of miles away. At first we thought it was a barn fire."
