Concern over ‘lost votes’
Wednesday 5th May 2010, 12:02PM BST.
A Shifnal town councillor has raised concerns that a number of residents will not be voting in tomorrow’s election – because they haven’t had their polling cards.
Eileen Briscoe, vice chairman of Shifnal Town Council, said she felt the problem could affect the vote in The Wrekin constituency, where current MP Mark Pritchard has a slender majority of just over 900.
She said: “In an age when we’re trying to get people to vote, to not give people their polling cards is not on.
“I am one of the people who haven’t had their cards yet. I would say there are 100 homes that haven’t had them. I know you can vote without them but some people don’t. And it means a lot of people don’t know where you can vote in Shifnal.
“In a seat which is quite marginal I think they should really have been sent out in plenty of time.
“I have been getting calls from members of the public asking what they should do.
“I’m not getting any answers. I think this is really bad.”
Shropshire Council is responsible for distributing the polling cards to the town and a spokesman today said according to records all polling cards had been sent out
A council spokesman said: “Our records show that polling cards for those roads were printed and sent to Royal Mail for distribution.
“People should be aware that they don’t need their polling cards to vote, and if they need to find out where their local polling station is they can call the council on 0345 678 9015.”
