Brown ‘bigot’ row opens door to reality

Prime Minister Gordon Brown leaves the home of Gillian Duffy in Rochdale
Prime Minister Gordon Brown leaves the home of Gillian Duffy in Rochdale

It really was the weirdest thing, writes Shirley Tart. We couldn’t take our eyes off Gillian Duffy’s front door for the 40 minutes Gordon Brown was behind it.

And then, having never smiled at all for 10 years, he appeared with that very strange smile lurking across his face the whole time he was explaining that he had apologised and Mrs Duffy had accepted his apology.

Beating himself further with verbal wet willow, Mr Brown went on to regret his comments into the forgotten microphone that Gillian Duffy was a bigot (not to mention blaming somebody called Sue for arranging the meeting) and the whole thing was a disaster, ridiculous in fact.

But there is actually a much wider and more worrying issue here.

What happened yesterday, confirmed how controlled and controlling politicians have become.

Those 76 rules around the leader debates, the third of which is tonight, show that all too clearly.

Whatever happened to the days when men were men (and women of course were gutsy women) and if they got accosted at the hustings, they entered into the argument with gusto.

I mean if a Prime Minister can get so sweaty and grim because an elderly lady touched a sensitive spot and raised issues he didn’t want to talk about, where exactly have we arrived?

I’ll tell you something – this lot would never survive a good old evening being heckled in a village hall.

Nowadays, you have to walk on eggshells round their egos, heavies protect them as though we’re in a police state, indeed ordinary voters are intimidated by those who think they are rather grand but actually have damn all to be grand about.

And whoever it is, apologising because you’ve been caught out is never the same as saying sorry because you are. Go on then, spot the difference here!

Thank you for providing a chance to comment on Ms Tart’s article.

[I mean if a Prime Minister can get so sweaty and grim because an elderly lady touched a sensitive spot and raised issues he didn’t want to talk about, where exactly have we arrived?]

If the lady in question had said something like, ” Do you think we have a reasonable balance of immigration and emigration in the UK Mr Brown?” I am sure she would have got a more erudite reply from the PM.

There are ways of discussing issues and I am sure if Mrs Duffy had made this comment about Eastern Europeans flocking to the UK to take our jobs, Daniel Kazcyncski would have found the statement provocative, if not offensive.

As with Australia the migration issue brings out some weird spin. Spin is the most evil intrusion into our lives. First of all, it is a hazy name for LIES.
Statistics are another juggling act with the truth. Witness the false information about people leaving Britain as against those arriving. The people leaving are British! The people arriving are anything but British. Britain will end up being populated by foreigners.

As for Gillian Duffy’s innocent question episode, Shirley Tart’s article is spot on!
Gordon Brown had more minders than any fowl dictator in the world since Hitler.
You have every right to ask, what has become of Britain?
Just read some of the Comments below!!!!

PS: We need British people in Australia to work in very high paid Mining Jobs,$billions are about to be spent in WA and Queensland. Don’t sell your house or shake up your family, come alone for two years to suss the place out. with Mining wages you’ll be able to visit home for holidays.

Gordon Brown is an electrol liability, and should have been replaced as leader prior to the election. Unfortunately the Labour Party did not have the backbone to oust him, and their inability to act will result in a very long time in the political wilderness.

    #2 Why Colin?

The majority of people ringing in to the radio have said that his only mistake was to apologise. I don’t really think he did apologise except to acknowledge that he felt the lady was a good person and she had been unintentionally offended but he did not withdraw that she was a bigot because she was.
Mrs Duffy did not have a problem offending people or she would have phrased her comments more intelligentally.

What about the old saying “those who listen in to others n’er hear good of themselves!”

The issue here is Mr Brown thought the lady in question was a bigot due to the views she held.I am sure he still holds those views of which he has every right to do so.The issue here was he was over heard saying it because the mike was left on so appoligise for that little gaff but he should not be asked to appoligise for having an opinion that she was a bigot.
If after that incident she changes her voting and votes for mmmmmmmm the bnp/ukip monster raving loony party or max clifford plc then that is her choice but to change for what some ones opinion of her was is a little backward thinking.

Quite agree Andrew. What party you vote for is about values and policy.

I thought GB answered her barrage of slightly aggressive questioning with great aplomb unlike Cameron when confronted by a parent asking for detail on cuts to spending regarding children with special needs. He got red and flustered having no proper answer and retreated into his car.

What a fuss over nothing. Freedom of speech is still operating in the UK I believe so Brown had every right to voice his opinion and, for once, I quite agree with him, that woman came across as a dyed in the wool bigot.
