Opik in children’s Question Time

Friday 23rd April 2010, 5:00AM BST.

Montgomery’s Liberal Democrat candidate, Lembit Opik, found himself being quizzed by children last night and admitted that it was as tough a grilling as on any Question Time panel.

Mr Opik lined up with Conservative leader David Cameron and Home Secretary Alan Johnson for a CBBC election special.

In front of more than 100 children they answered questions posed by four 11 to 15 years olds. Mr Opik answered questioned on the economy, telling the audience that Liberal Democrats wanted to take a bit from the rich and give it to the poor.

But when questioned about Afghanistan and nuclear power, he said his personal view was different to his party.

He said he was sceptical of his party’s anti-nuclear power stance, and on Afghanistan he said: “We are not making progress.” The interviewers criticised him for giving his point of view.
