Police were called to the Sunday Market, which is held on a car park in Harlescott, after stallholders reported being verbally abused by a gang of youngsters.

The group also caused disruption in a number of shops in the area, leading to police being called.

Shropshire Meat Auctions took to social media to apologise to customers.

In a Facebook post, a spokesman said: “Sadly the market has had to finish early due to travellers making threats, generally being abusive and causing trouble.

"As far as I’m aware all the market traders are OK and unharmed. The police are now dealing with the issue.

“I generally have nothing against the travelling community. However these type of people give the whole community a bad name.

"All the market traders on a Sunday are so friendly and out to make an honest living, yet they are the ones who have had to stop trading."

West Mercia Police today said the issue had been 'resolved'.

Force spokeswoman Eleanor Harris said: "Police were called to Battlefield Industrial Estate on Sunday morning following concerns with younger people within a travelling community on the site.

"Officers attended and spoke to those involved to resolve the situation. Those in the travelling community have now left Shrewsbury."
