Kenneth and Jordan Mansell, along with another unidentified man, were seen throwing the items at the Peugeot in Pontesbury in November 2015, Shrewsbury Crown Court heard.

Prosecutor John Oates told a jury that when they were challenged by Gordon Riley, the Mansells set upon him, kicking and punching Mr Riley when he was on the floor.

Mr Riley's wife and daughter tried to intervene but they were both assaulted by the defendants, the court heard. He was left with five broken ribs. Mr Oates said: "Gordon Riley, his wife Katie and their daughter Chloe left a birthday party which had taken place at Pontesbury Village Hall.

"They came across a parked car and they could see people throwing tins of beer. Chloe and Katie recognised two of the men as the two defendants.

"One of the beer cans was thrown so it hit Katie. Gordon Riley said 'what was that for?' and he was set upon."

Kenneth Mansell, aged 38, and Jordan Mansell, 20, both of Kingsway North, York, deny four charges each.

They are causing GBH with intent, two counts of assault by beating, and a charge of criminal damage.

The trial continues.
