Man tries to drag Newport school pupil into car

A man attempted to drag a pupil into his car in Newport as they walked home from school.

Police have been informed by Burton Borough School after the incident at around 3.30pm yesterday, while teachers have also written to parents and advised students not to walk home alone.

Telford & Wrekin Council has also been informed as well as other schools nearby.

Karl Hill, assistant headteacher at Burton Borough, said: "We have had some information come through that allegedly a student was approached by a person in a white BMW coupe who attempted to drag the student into the car.

"This was in the vicinity of Audley Avenue.

"Police are involved and have been making door-to-door enquiries.

"We have spoken to students and stressed the need to be extremely vigilant, especially at this time of year and with the dark nights.

"We have advised children to walk home in groups and avoid delay. Parents have also been advised to talk to their children about what to do if approached.

"We have notified students about the incident and the precautions they should be taking."
