Brenda Walton was driving a Ford Focus when she was stopped on Woodside Road in Ketley, Telford, in the early hours of October 8, Telford Magistrates Court heard.

Mr Nick Wadsworth, prosecuting, said she was followed after passing a stationary police car in Holyhead Road.

He said: "The vehicle came to the attention of officers. It was not displaying any form of lights."

After being pulled over, the 47-year-old, of Hill Road in Overdale, Telford, said she was unaware she had been driving with her lights off.

She failed a roadside breath test and was arrested.

She was taken to the police station and gave a reading of 76 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – more than twice the limit.

Walton pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle while over the limit.

Representing herself, she told magistrates that she had not realised how much she was over the limit.

She said: "I made a bad decision of getting in the vehicle. I regret it. I can't do anything about it now."

She was handed an 18-month driving ban and told to pay a £185 fine, £85 costs and £30 victim surcharge.
