Matthew Lord was at the wheel of an Audi A6 when he was pulled over by a police officer on the A5 Shrewsbury bypass, Telford Magistrates Court heard.

Mr Nick Wadsworth, prosecuting, said a police officer had been travelling westbound on the A5 when he saw the 21-year-old travelling in the same direction.

Mr Wadsworth said the officer thought the vehicle was exceeding the speed limit and had to accelerate to more than 100mph to catch up.

He said the Audi was swerving and, after pulling him over, said Lord was slurring his speech.

He was arrested and gave a reading of having 93 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – more than twice the legal limit of 35.

Lord, of Longden Green, Shrewsbury, pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal alcohol limit.

Ms Elizbeth Kenny, for Lord, said: "This young man is absolutely devastated. The shame he has brought the family is colossal.

"This is a young man who has never crossed the threshold of a police station."

She said he had previously been employed as a deputy manager of a pub and now worked with a brain injury charity.

Ms Kenny told magistrates that being able to drive was mandatory and he was going to lose his job.

She added: "He fully co-operated with the police. This has been a complete shock to this young man."

The court heard that at the time of the offence, which happened earlier this month, he had been driving from a nightclub to Shrewsbury.

Sentencing Lord, Ms Nancy Walsh, chairwoman of magistrates, acknowledged his strong work ethic, but told him: "If you are daft enough to drive with alcohol in your system, at 100mph plus – tough!

"I'm sure it's a very hard lesson that has been learned."

In addition to the 24-month driving ban, Lord will have to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work. He was also told to pay £85 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.
