Witness plea after vandals hit Market Drayton toilets again

Further vandalism to public toilets in Market Drayton has left councillors fed up and "lost for words".

Thousands of pounds have already been spent on repairing the public toilets in the town centre and in Newport Road.

Now the Towers Lawn toilet block has become the latest to be targeted by vandals.

Councillor David Minnery, mayor of Market Drayton, said: "I sadly have to report further vandalism within the Towers Lawn toilet block which has involved excrement being smeared on the walls and thrown onto the ceiling.

"I am actually lost for words on this one; even animals have more self-respect.

"In the longer term we will need to redesign this service, but until then any information on those carrying out these acts would be welcomed."

Councillor Roger Hughes, Shropshire councillor for Market Drayton, said: "It is really unfair on the people who have to clean this mess up.

"Nobody should have to tackle that.

"We have some brilliant staff who work really hard to clean up the appalling mess."

The council recently revealed two cameras costing about £3,000 are to be installed to cover the public toilets and skate park on Newport Road.

It comes after extensive graffiti was found in the men's toilets in the last few weeks.

Repair work has been completed and Gwyn Jones, from HMP Stoke Heath, has now finished painting and decorating the area.

Councillor Minnery added: "Those of you who use the picnic area or who drive along the Newport Road may have noticed the recent improvements in the area around the toilet block.

"There was appalling vandalism that took place there a few weeks ago.

"Thanks in no small part to the prison service the interior of the block has been repainted and repaired and we have now removed a lot of the nearby foliage that used to shield the site from the nearby CCTV.

"We will shortly be altering the ends of the building too to further increase visibility, so hopefully that will deter the small number who somehow think it is funny to trash other people's property and spoil things for others."The town council is also progressing with plans to replace the public toilets at the town hall in Frogmore Road.

It is looking to have a new standalone toilet block installed adjacent to the town hall.

Last year a fire was started in the disabled toilet on Frogmore Road. The toilets were closed in August last year when a fire in the disabled toilet spread and caused damage to the walls, light fixtures and fittings.

Councillors have said they believe the toilets were left with £10,000 worth of damage.
