Carl New, 35, was ordered to serve six months imprisonment as well as completing a community order.

New, of St Giles Road, Wolverhampton, committed the crimes in Telford. He admitted actual bodily harm when he appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday.

Judge Jim Tindal said the latest crime was just the most recent in a "prolonged campaign" of domestic abuse.

New punched and headbutted his former partner in the most recent attack.

Dean Easthope, for New, said: "There is not much evidence about what led up to the incident, but there was a physical altercation."

Mr Easthope said that New also received injuries during the incident on March 28, which meant that after being arrested he had to be taken to hospital to have his head glued.

He said: "He plans to move away and live with his brother outside of Telford and make a new start."

New had been subject to a restraining order at the time of the offence in March, but Kevin Jones, for the prosecution, said there had been some confusion as to whether the order had still been in effect.

New was in breach of a suspended sentence handed down to him on January 29, 2014, and a community order given in March 14.

Judge Tindal gave a further six-month custodial sentence for the breach, to run concurrently with his punishment for the assault and said he should continue to work with the probation service on the remainder of the community order on his release, which still had about 15 months left to serve.

Judge Tindal said that New had a long history of petty offending which had all but stopped by 2012.

But he urged him to cease his relationship for the betterment of both him and his partner.

He added: "But since 2014 you have found yourself in a relationship which is an appalling relationship for both you and your partner.

"Since 2014 there has been a prolonged campaign of domestic abuse.

"Your relationship is not a good one. I rarely say that but in this case the evidence is overwhelming."
