An airgun pellet shot past a gardener and hit a shed roof in a Shropshire village.

The alarm was raised after a resident working in the Watling Street South area of Church Stretton heard a loud bang.

No-one was hurt and it is not thought the pellet was deliberately fired at anyone.

But police are appealing for witnesses as it is an offence for a pellet to be fired beyond the perimeter of a person's property. The incident happened between 1.30pm and 2pm on Tuesday in the Watling Street South area.

Sergeant Adrian Woolley said: "A used pellet was recovered from a garden after a loud bang was heard. A resident was doing some work on a shed when the pellet landed on the roof.

Someone was obviously firing an airgun in the area of Hazler Road, Hazler Crescent, Watling Street South and Sandford Avenue ."

He added: "Owners of air weapons are reminded it is an offence for a pellet to be fired beyond the perimeter of their own garden. No-one was injured but we would like to trace the person responsible."

Anyone with information should contact Sergeant Woolley at Church Stretton police station on 101. Or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
