Fighting broke out at the Brooklands pub in Mill Road, close to Shrewsbury's Greenhous Meadow stadium, after the game on Saturday against already relegated Portsmouth.

Just over 8,000 people went to the game, with more than 1,600 making the trip from the south coast. Extra police had been drafted in because of the bumper crowd.

After a carnival atmosphere inside the ground, troubled flared following the game, which Shrewsbury won 3-2.

Two people were arrested on suspicion of assault and another for public order offences. Police said the two people arrested over the assaults were Portsmouth followers.

Force Duty Inspector Michelle Bennett said: "Three people were arrested following the game. We had a high presence in the town but a member of the public alerted us to a fight at the Brooklands pub.

"Those involved had gone from the match. Two people were arrested for assault and were supporting the away team. One was arrested for public order offences."

Earlier Superintendent James Tozer, the policing commander for Shropshire, reported that there had been no incidents of disorder at the game itself.
