The organisation, which has helped raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for local charities since being formed in 1950, is to close after a vote taken at the society's annual general meeting on Monday.

Due to Round Tables having an upper age limit of 45 and the majority of members leaving this year under the age rule, the decision was taken to formally disband.

Outgoing chairman Mark Halsey said he hoped the group may eventually be restarted by other young men in the town.

"The current members were very sad to be closing the Shrewsbury Table down after so many successful years," he said.

"But we've all have a load of great memories from our time in Table."
