With wounds down to the bone and undernourished, vets at Haygate Vetinary Centre in Wellington fought to stabilise the little black cat, called Nugget, so he could begin the road to recovery.

But after more than a fortnight of tests Nugget could no longer undergo anaesthetics, despite his wounds healing well.

He is believed to have been deliberately burned before being abandoned.

In a post on the TabiiCats Rescue Facebook page, staff said: "To say we are devastated is an understatement. He was shown love and kindness and our vets did everything they could."

TabiiCats had planned to take care of Nugget until he was well enough to go out for adoption.
