The application for three traveller pitches – originally six – on fields near Drenewydd Farm at Park Hall, was yesterday rejected by members of Shropshire Council's north planning committee, after it attracted more than 200 objections from local residents.

After lengthy debate with all members agreed the site was "in the wrong place" after they paid it a visit earlier in the day.

Councillor Paul Wynn, who represents the Prees ward, proposed that the plans should be thrown out.

He said: "I propose the application is refused for three reasons, the visual impact of the site, the safety of the families there as they are right by the railway there andI don't think it's a viable site financially to set it up."

In the past week, Network Rail also objected to the plans because of the location of the site and the footpath level crossing "due to the added safety risk of young families and young children being able to access the railway"
