A police chaplain who was suspended from his post has thanked people for their support after an investigation into comments he made was closed.

He was suspended after raising concerns about the welfare of children in his role with Telford street pastors.

He questioned whether enough was being done by West Mercia Police to act on information given about children at risk.

There were concerns from senior officers that the minister was being compromised by a conflict of interest.

But, it was revealed yesterday that, after an investigation, he will return to the position.

He said: "I'm actually delighted to be returning to my police chaplain duties.

"I've missed the regular contact with all my colleagues and friends in the police service.

"I'm glad the matter is over and done with and that we can now move on."

In a statement released by Chief Superintendent Charles Hill yesterday, it said the investigation was set to determine whether Mr Osmund-Smith's role as police chaplain conflicted with his role as lead co-ordinator for the Street Pastors in Telford.

It added that the investigation had highlighted a number of recommendations but that he would be able to continue in both positions.

Mr Osmund-Smith said: "I don't think there was ever any doubt there would be any ruling other than that it was not a conflict of interest.

"I think what has been said is that there will be a consultation over the next few months as to possibly re-defining what the role of police chaplain is and that may mean a more close day-to-day working with various partnership agencies in the community. I see it as a positive outcome.

"I have been very moved by the level of support from family and friends during what has been a particularly difficult time for me."

Mr Osmund-Smith, who is lead co-ordinator for the Street Pastors movement in Telford, said earlier this year he had doubts that information passed to officers was always acted on.

He went on sabbatical leave in November after West Mercia Police launched disciplinary action regarding the matter.

The Baptist minister said he had always been supportive of the police force and its efforts to bring those who preyed on young people to justice.
