Gareth Eagle and his fiancée Tara Harper from Church Aston discovered their daughter Kaydence had cancer in November, and in the time since, the Newport community has rallied around them to ensure they have a fantastic Christmas.

More than £1,800 has been raised on crowdfunding site JustGiving, with no signs of the fundraising slowing down.

Gareth, 29, a press technician at Stadco, said: "We are truly grateful for the support of the community and everybody else in this difficult time.

"I never expected any of it, it is truly overwhelming. Words can not describe how grateful we are as a family.

"The town of Newport is a great place to live, but what makes it so special is that in times of need we pull together as a family.

"I'd like to thank everyone for their generosity and the continuous support for our little princess Kaydence.

"Also I'd like to thank Carl Dixon, Liz Price and Zena at Cappelos, Andy Bowsher at The Honeysuckle and Mike for organising the golf day at Aqualate Golf Course.

"Thank you to everybody who has donated for making our children's Christmas a very special one."

Liz Price, who started the donation page, wrote: "At four-years-old Kaydence and her family have a tough road ahead of them. We have been racking our brains on how we can help.

"With Christmas looming we thought it would be nice if we 'did Christmas' for them this year!

"With this is mind we would like to raise funds to buy presents for Kaydence and her brother Finley.

"This is a family who work hard and have only ever depended on themselves so please find it in your hearts to help this family and show them they are not alone in this awful battle they face."

The Honeysuckle Inn, on Beaumaris Road, will host a quiz night on December 20 to help boost the total.

Landlord and Newport west ward Councillor Andy Bowsher said it was fantastic to see the community come together to help one of their own.

Entry for the quiz night costs £10 a team. A raffle will also be held, and any businesses that wish to donate prizes should contact the pub on 01952 814141.

Those wgo wish to donate can visit justgiving.com/crowdfunding/kaydence or Capello ByZena on St Mary's Street, Newport.
