The charity's milestone was marked with an awards ceremony at Greenhous Meadow in which a host of people involved in their activities were recognised. Volunteer of the year was Martin Smith, who works in the disability sports programme.

Jade Hibbert, Town in the Community's education and inclusion manager, won the above and beyond award after running 21 half-marathons over the year to raise money for the charity's Down's Syndrome and cerebral palsy campaigns.

The special recognition award went to Phil Allmark, while two youngsters were honoured. Evan White won outstanding effort in a disability programme, and Owen Rowlands outstanding effort in a come and play programme.

Other winners were Jake Mullinder, who received an outstanding effort in education award, and Alan Bowers, who took home the outstanding effort for the over-50s prize. Shrewsbury Cathedral Catholic Primary School took the partner school award.

The evening, hosted by chairman of trustees Ryan Jervis, also included a silent auction with a pair of signed Jonah Lomu rugby boots among the prizes.

Formed in 1995, Shrewsbury Town in the Community has grown steadily and had more than 7,000 people take part in activities this year.

Head of community Jamie Edwards said: "It was a really good evening. It was great in many respects because it is so difficult to explain the scope of what we do in the space of only a few minutes.

"To have people there for the whole evening helps us get our message across. We are not just football coaches. Of course that is part of it but there is a lot more too it as well."
