Shropshire church couple keeping it in the family with job share

When Richard Burton was made redundant from his post in the Church of England it was his wife, Sarah, who found the perfect solution for the family – a unique job share.

The couple are now splitting responsibilities as rector of St John the Baptist Church.

After moving to the area five years ago Sarah became rector of Whittington and West Felton, while Richard was employed as senior parish development officer for the Chester Diocese for 10 years.

The decision to share Sarah's role as vicar came when Richard was made redundant.

It is a scenario that is becoming more common in the workplace as people become more flexible to react to less predictable times in a changing economy, but is highly unusual in the church.

"We had always wanted to do it at some point but we were sort of pushed into it, we are very pleased it happened sooner rather than later" said Richard.

"It was a silver lining, and a life change. Whilst before we were always time poor and money rich, now it's the other way round, but we are lucky enough to be financially secure ," said Sarah.

Sarah's role has remained as rector but Richard is now an associate minister. They carry out work that needs to be done across the parishes and share the load. This includes home visits, funerals, school assemblies and general pastoral support.

She said: "We act as a source of comfort to people in their homes, we also attend schools and offer themed collective worship where children are given time to reflect on issues such as peace, friendship and bullying."

They say their shared role can be seen as a reflection of the changing part the church plays in the community.

Cuts are being made – where once there would be separate rectors for each parish, they have now merged.

"Richard had a chance to see changes taking place at Chester. It was through this that we saw how we could help our own churches respond to changes" said Sarah.

"We hold a messy church every month when adults and toddlers are invited to praise and play and we do crafts. It's a lively event.

"We have a Facebook page set up to publicise events, and text reminders are sent to people to inform them of future services."

Richard is also organising a 'scratch nativity play' that will take place on December 11 in the morning. Adults and children are invited to take part and improvise scenes on the day, with some prompting.

He added: "We realise how society is changing and people are busier. We hope this will encourage families to take part."
