Officials from Powys County Council's food safety team carried out a check at the Broad Street shop yesterday following complaints from a customer and issued a hygiene emergency prohibition notice, ordering the food department of the store to be closed.

Although the Post Office section of the shop is open, the food department remains closed today, and officers from the local authority have said it is unclear when the store will reopen again.

Councillor John Powell, Cabinet Member for Environmental Health, said: "We received a complaint from a member of the public regarding First Stop on Broad Street, Welshpool.

"Staff from our food safety team carried out an inspection of the premises and during the inspection found evidence of rat activity. This was brought immediately to the attention of the business operator.

"A hygiene emergency prohibition notice has been served on the premises, which will remain in place while our food safety team works closely with the business operator to resolve this matter."
