Whitchurch town flag: Residents urged to help choose design

Residents are being urged to help a council decide what design will feature on its new town flag.

The flag competition was launched in Whitchurch just before the summer holidays, and mayor Mike McDonald says the standard of entry was high, with two finalists selected.

Councillors have added a third, amalgamated design option and want people to vote by Monday.

"We've long wanted to do something to represent the town properly, and my fellow councillors and I felt this was a good way of doing it," said Councillor McDonald. "We asked pupils and young people around the town to give it their best go in designing the flag, and some of the entries were brilliant. We liked the two finalists, but we also think there's an option to blend the two of them together – and that's what we want people to vote on."

Option one is the amalgamated design, and option two is by Lee Kay, whose design takes in the town's cheese background.

Option three is Liam Stevens's design showing the town's clock and watch making history.

To vote visit tWhitchurch Civic Centre or email info@whitchurchcouncil.uk by Monday at 5pm.

Meanwhile, nominations are also open for Whitchurch's citizen of the year, with the winner set to switch on the town's Christmas lights.

Councillor McDonald is asking for nominations for people who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

He added: "This is an excellent opportunity to reward someone in the town who goes above and beyond to improve the lives of others."
