Complaint to be made against Shropshire Council on Ludlow supermarket decision

A formal complaint will be raised against Shropshire Council officers for stopping a decision over Ludlow's out-of-town supermarket.

Andy Boddington, the member of Shropshire Council's south planning committee who moved to have the planned store at Rocks Green thrown out, said that officers "failed" the public on Tuesday by blocking councillors' will to refuse the scheme, which now still "hangs over Ludlow".

The plans for a new supermarket and petrol station off the A49 bypass have been bitterly opposed by town centre traders and residents for two years.

Councillor Boddington, who represents Ludlow North, said most people wanted the matter resolved at this week's meeting, but "planners failed us" on the Rocks Green supermarket application.

"Councillors wanted to reject the application but they were blocked by the council's legal team," he said. "I am raising a formal complaint about this.

"There was a furious argument about this that lasted for more than 15 minutes."

He said legal issues included whether traffic from 200 future homes planned south of Rocks Green should be taken into account and what the significance was of new retail data only published days before by developer Blackfriars.
