Letter: Laziness by shoppers leads to food waste

I really do like my local Aldi store, but one thing really makes my blood boil.

Published

So many customers pick up an ambient or chilled food item and half way round their trip through the store decide they don't want it and dump it in the freezer or they just leave a chilled or frozen item on the ambient shelves.

Every week during the short time when my husband and I do our shop we see at least three items in the freezer which shouldn't be there or chilled meat/fish in the toiletry section. These will be binned as Aldi is legally not allowed to sell these items, even if they are frozen.

Why can't these culprits take the time and put the food back from where they have picked it up? It's not that it is a huge store. These products spoil and then have to be binned and it's a disgrace.

Are we so rich that we don't give a damn anymore about food waste?

Are we so ignorant that we don't care that we have so much food we can just bin it when other people are starving?

But then we are so quick to moan when the supermarkets are putting the prices up due to their increase of food waste.

Food waste is bad enough when products are out of date but it is shameful when it is due to lazy customers who can't put an unwanted item back in its original location. I am ashamed. I hope I'll never catch someone red-handed.
