Simon Gibbons, who owns Simon Gibbons Butchers in Broseley, is recovering at Oswestry Hospital afterthe crash at Darley Moor racing track on April 3.

The community has pulled together to raise funds for Mr Gibbons and his family to help with expenses that may arise when he is well enough to leave hospital.

Jo Halstead, a friend of the family, said: "Currently on the Just Giving page, the total from individual donations stands at £2,590.

"Collections in the Hurdley's hardware shop, Butchers Bar and cash donations given directly to Paula Gibbons and other events have been paid into a treasurer's account which currently stands at £4,155 giving the total of £6,745."

The Lady Forrester Trust has agreed to match fund to a maximum of £5,000 when Mr Gibbons is released from hospital.

Last weekend children took part in a sponsored bike ride and the Golden Ball pub in Ironbridge held a live music event, proceeds from which have yet to be received.

The community is fundraising for any ongoing expenses, including travel to hospital, mobility equipment, adapting their home, or even a holiday for the family.

It is believed the accident was caused by a blackout or heart attack and Mr Gibbons is said to be recovering slowly and breathing without the aid of a ventilator.

He was initially moved to a major trauma hospital outside the county but is now in Oswestry. Friends want to raise enough money to help the family with the expenses that may arise

In order for Mr Gibbons to eventually return home, he will need a number of adaptations made to the ground floor of his house, including a hospital-style bed and hoist, bathroom facilities and a wheelchair. To find out more or donate, visit crowdfunding.justgiving.com/simon-gibbons
