Myfanwy Murray is appealing to drivers to slow down on the country roads of Shropshire and think about other road users.

The 22-year-old was riding her horse Razz through the village of Kinnerley, close to her home, when they were involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Zafira.

The 13-year-old horse broke its leg and the decision was taken for the vet called out to Razz to put her down.

"She had gone down on her knees, saving me from being thrown off," Myfanwy said.

"She was incredibly calm, it was just awful to see her. Razz was a once-in-a-lifetime horse and her death has left such a hole in our lives."

Myfanwy said: "Most drivers are very considerate but there are some who just do not slow down on lanes or an bad bends like the one we were on. This happened on a really bad bend at Kinnerley Church and I had deliberately moved onto the other side of the road so that I would be more visible.

"The British Horse Society says drivers should pass horses at no more than 15 miles an hour and give them a wide berth.

"It could have been someone on a bike or a child in a pushchair that was on that bend and I could easily have been badly injured."

Police are investigating the accident. Constable Henry King-Salter said the accident happened shortly before noon on September 10.

"Sadly the horse was badly injured had to be put down at the scene and I'm now trying to establish the full circumstances of the incident," he said. "Neither the rider of the horse nor the car driver were injured."

Witnesses to the collision should call 101 quoting reference 333S of September 10.
