Shropshire weather: County seeing out summer basking in sunshine

Shorter days might be on their way, but summer is not over yet – sunshine and clear skies are set to continue this week after a warm bank holiday weekend.

Though the nights are now drawing in as August gives way to September, in Shropshire this weekend the weather stayed warm and mostly dry with people making the most from enjoying festivals, getting out the barbecues – or even taking to the skies in hot air balloons.

And thankfully, it looks set to continue for the time being.

The Met Office predicts cloudy but dry conditions in the region today and tomorrow, with peaks of 20C, with some showers coming in Friday and Saturday when temperatures will be more like 18C – but Monday is set to be 21C and sunny again.

Up, up and away – one way to enjoy the great weather is by taking to the skies in a hot air balloon, as these lucky people did. And the lovely summer days may not be over yet.

It comes after temperatures reached about 22C across the past few days giving some of the county's annual bank holiday events plenty of warm sunshine.

Shropshire Star reader Johnny Cleaton snapped some stunning aerial pictures in a balloon ride across the county, while others enjoyed traditional music and dance in balmy conditions at Shrewsbury Folk Festival, and thousands baked at Shrewsbury Steam Rally, in Onslow Park. On the water there was the annual coracle regatta at Ironbridge and medieval-themed days at both Ludlow and Stokesay castles in the south, making the most of the last bank holiday of the summer.

Met Office forecaster Chris Page said: "We've had a brilliant bank holiday – lots of sunshine around, or decent sunny spells at least for a large chunk of the country. In fact in places we've seen wall-to-wall sunshine as well which has been really quite welcome so a fine weekend.

"There will be some spells of light rain at times, mainly for the north and west of the country, however, it looks as though it will be dry with some spells of sunshine too and towards the south and east it will feel quite warm as well. Not a bad week at all in prospect."

Further south could be in for hotter weather, with Ladbrokes giving 2/1 odds that temperatures of 30C (86F) will be recorded before Sunday, while Coral have slashed the odds to 7/4 on August being the hottest on record.
