Shropshire weather: Red sky at night but weekend outlook set to turn

They may say red sky at night, shepherd's delight – but rain could ruin this Bank Holiday weekend. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of rain from 9am on Saturday until 9am on Sunday.

And sadly beautiful scenes such as this one of rooftops in Oswestry could be a thing of the past.

The picture was taken by Shropshire Star reader Dan Brown, from Oswestry.

It shows a beautiful sunset from earlier this week when the county was basking in sunshine.

But wind and rain are set to hit the region from today.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Thundery showers are likely to move northwards into some southern parts of England during Saturday morning, becoming more widespread and heavy over central UK through the course of Saturday and overnight into Sunday morning.

"Please be aware of the risk of local disruption to transport and outdoor activities."

He added: "In particular, be aware of the potential for some spray and standing water on roads, and the possibility of road closures.

"This warning has been updated to include more of southern UK, as well as starting the warning period slightly earlier."

Meanwhile, motorists planning to hit the road ahead during the Bank Holiday are being warned of delays.

Max Holdstock, of the AA, said traffic jams would build up around large events and he urged people to carry at least a litre of water per person in their vehicles because of muggy weather.

"August bank holiday weekend is always a bit of a mad scramble on the roads," he said.

"Traffic is likely to build up on Sunday – so allow plenty of extra time if you're travelling then."

Highways England said nearly 98 per cent of England's motorways and major A roads would be clear of roadworks over the weekend.

About 375 miles of roadworks had been either completed or suspended.

The coach operator National Express said it expected its busiest weekend of the year, with hundreds of thousands travelling by coach.
