WATCH: 'All hope is gone' – Shropshire veterans left with nowhere to go

Residents of a centre that provides support for ex servicemen from Shropshire today spoke of their shock after hearing it is to close.

The Stoneham Veterans Service has catered for veterans from across the region, including Shropshire, for the last two years.

But it is to shut down next month after bosses at the Home Group said there was no funding left.

Robert Moss, one of the residents, said: "All hope has gone. We've been let down and a lot of us don't know where to turn."

Residents at the centre, in Wolverhampton, now need to find new homes. Many need daily support for mental health issues linked to their time in the armed forces.

John Gough, 46, who moved from Shropshire into a flat at the centre last year, said there is a lack of help for mental health issues on offer for ex-servicemen.

He said the veterans had been grateful for support from the local Sikh community, who had regularly provided food parcels, and the Royal British Legion, as well as military charities such as Help for Heroes.

"When it comes to dealing with the mental problems that have come since I left the forces there isn't much around," said Mr Gough, from Telford, who served in both Gulf Wars during 12 years in the Army.

He said he suffers from PTSD and has attempted to kill himself on five occasions.

"During my service I saw people killed, things have happened that I don't like to talk about to this day," he said.

"There is no way I am ready to move on. I'm in a state of panic at the moment because I have got to leave here in a few weeks. I have nowhere to go."

Wolverhampton South East MP Pat McFadden has vowed to take up the veterans' cause in Parliament when it resumes next month.

He said: "These men served their country and now need our help in a proper, supportive environment. Their country has a duty to support them now their service is over."

Twelve former soldiers are affected by the uncertainty led by the decision to close.

Clare Lees, head of client services at Home Group, said: "Funding for our veterans' transition service came to an end in March. Since then we've continued to run the service but we can't operate at a loss indefinitely."
