Telford drivers face new roadwork misery

Four-way temporary traffic lights will go up on a roundabout in Telford earlier than expected after a string of delays.

A combination of setbacks from utility companies have led to plans for Limekiln Bank roundabout in Priorslee being changed.

Delays in equipment mean the council's contractor, McPhillips Construction, cannot continue work until utilities have been diverted.

As a result, carriageway reconstruction work needs to be brought forward for the Castle Farm Way and Redhill Way approaches to Limekiln Bank roundabout.

The work, which was originally scheduled for late next month, will mean utility companies can complete their work without delaying the main roundabout works.

But for drivers this will mean temporary four-way traffic lights will be required for up to three weeks following installation on Tuesday.

Drivers using the roundabout have only been free from lights on the island since April 11 after weeks of delays during previous roadworks.

Councillor Angela McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: "We anticipate increased delays to traffic using Limekiln roundabout during this period and I would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused to road users."

Limekiln Bank is one of six roundabouts which is being improved as part of Telford Growth Point package.

Work at Limekiln Bank includes widening the roundabout and improving the entry and exit arms to provide additional capacity.

The scheme will also see the installation of a signal-controlled crossing for pedestrians across Telford Way and replacement of street lighting, traffic signs and bollards.

Work will also begin at Trench Lock roundabout in October and the Clock Tower roundabout in Muxton in June. All the work is set to be completed by March.
