The medals were presented prior to 1989 and were presented for his service in Northern Ireland and the Falklands. The medals are engraved with the son's service number and name.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity on College Road on Tuesday between 9.40am and 3.30pm to come forward.

The victim, a woman in her seventies, returned to the property and found that entry had been forced to the main door.

A quantity of cash had been taken from the property. Also amongst the items taken from the property were her son's army medals.

One medal was recovered from a nearby garden.

It is suspected that the others may have been discarded by the offender or offenders as they left the scene via Shrewsbury Road onto Sycamore Close, heading towards the town centre.

Investigating officer, PC Leanne Pearson, said: "We are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry in relation to this case. I am appealing to anyone who may have found or have knowledge of the medals whereabouts.

"The medals cannot be replaced and are very personal to the man who served his country. I would also ask that antiques dealers and pawn brokers be alert to anyone offering them items similar to those described."

If you can help officers with their investigation please call 101 quoting incident number 425s of May 17.
