Ava was taken from Shrewsbury and owner Donna Elizabeth put out a desperate plea for her return on Facebook.

Within hours, the post had been shared more than 13,000 times and the dog was eventually found tied to a tree in Merthyr Tydfil.

In the post Donna, who works for the Severn Valley Railway, said that Ava disappeared at 1am yesterday. A neighbour checked his CCTV, which showed a hooded figure putting Ava in a white van.

Donna said: "A dog walker eventually found Ava tied to a tree in Merthyr Tydfil.

"She was taken to a local vets and scanned for her chip. I cannot thank everyone enough for sharing my post.

"Anyone who knows me understands how much my dog means to me. She is like my child.

"The vet down there explained that a lot of trafficking happens between Wales and Newport of stolen working dogs, mainly terriers, spaniels, lurches. She believes someone would have seen me walking Ava and targeted me."
