Terri-Anne Powell, West Mercia Police spokeswoman, said: "We were called at 7am on Tuesday to reports of an overturned livestock trailer on the A5 between the Churncote and Woodcote roundabouts.

"The trailer was transporting sheep, eight of which died and the rest were taken to a nearby farm."

It was one of two crashes to have happened in the town that day.

The second happened at 7.07am and involved a mini van, a Suzuki and a Ford Mondeo on Ellesmere Road.

Ms Powell added: "The road was closed between Mount Pleasant and Hubert Way and re-opened at 8:50am. No injuries were reported but the drivers of the two cars went to hospital as a precaution."
