Extra CCTV cameras have been installed around a Shropshire town to help tackle anti-social behaviour.

The latest cameras in Newport were installed by Telford & Wrekin Council due to an increase in the number of complaints about damage and anti-social behaviour in the town. Since the start of the year a number of cars have been damaged by a group of youths.

Pc Lee Thomas, said: "One of the problems we have faced in Newport for a long time is that although various parts of the town have had ongoing issues with nuisance and anti-social behaviour, very few people have taken the trouble to report it.

"A common message we have been giving out at every possible opportunity is that if people do not report matters to the police, then we don't know about them and therefore can't do anything about it.

"What has happened here is that we have had the reports and therefore been able to gather the evidence to show the need for extra measures to be put in place."

The new cameras are placed around the towns' swimming pool and cover the canal basin, Water Lane car park and the nearby Victoria Park's children's play area.

Pc Thomas added: "There are one or two other locations in the town where we believe cameras would be a benefit but it will depend on whether we can show there is a need for them."

He also revealed that further plans are being considered for CCTV coverage.
