RAF student pilot Cameron Forster was a member of the University of Birmingham Air Squadron (UBAS), based at Cosford, between 2012 and 2014.

The 21-year-old, originally from Burgess Hill, West Sussex, was one of two people who died when their light aircraft crashed in North Yorkshire last Saturday morning.

Ajvir Singh Sandhu, 25, from Essex, also died when the plane crashed in a field off Mains Lane, Ryedale.

The UBAS provides flying training, adventure training, basic military skills and personal development to selected university students.

In a tribute posted on Facebook, the University of Birmingham Air Squadron said: "All at UBAS are devastated to hear about the passing of Cam Forster, one of the squadron's brightest stars.

"He was with us between 2012 and 2014, and he was hugely liked and admired.

"With such charisma and enthusiasm, it is no surprise that many aspired to be like him.

"The UBAS family have lost a treasured friend. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered."

His friends also paid their own respects on Facebook.

Phil Atkinson wrote: "RIP Cam. A great UBAS student and a fine young man who I was privileged to have known.

"Condolences to Cameron's family."

Tina Forster said: "Such a terrible loss. Lovely memories of a cheeky happy chap who loved bacon baps.

"Condolences to Cameron's family."

Jack Hart added: "Loved playing rugby with and against you! Great mate and you'll be missed."

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has launched an inquiry into the cause of the crash.

RAF Linton-on-Ouse station commander, Group Captain Ian Laing said the base had been "saddened" to learn of the men's deaths.

He said: "They were both exceptionally talented young men in the prime of their lives."
