Councillor Richard Overton was unhurt after being hit by the tile – which broke in two on impact. The meeting of the authority's scrutiny management board was stopped for about five minutes by chairman Councillor Shirley Reynolds to make sure Councillor Overton and council officers sitting nearby were OK.

Those gathering for the meeting in Room G2 at Addenbrooke House in Telford Town Centre on Wednesday evening had pointed out before it started that some of the ceiling tiles looked loose.

Councillor Overton, cabinet member for housing, public health and protection, was quickly able to joke about what had happened before the meeting resumed.

"I am fine," he said.

One officer got a bit of dust in her eye but was able to continue with the meeting.
