Lucy Allan junior doctor row: Under-fire MP will meet junior doctors

Telford MP Lucy Allan today pledged to meet junior doctors – and defended comments she made on social media following the latest industrial action.

Ms Allan said she was making arrangements to meet two doctors at her next constituency surgery.

But she said she would only discuss the issue with people living in the Telford constituency she represents.

It comes after 1,500 people joined a Junior Doctors of Telford Facebook group that wants to set up a meeting for several doctors to discuss the proposed NHS contract and subsequent strike action with Ms Allan.

Ms Allan had claimed last week's industrial action by junior doctors was irresponsible and that medics were "holding the British public to ransom" – despite officials at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust praising striking doctors for their "professionalism" for making sure preparations were made in advance for patients to be treated.

She said: "So far I have two trainee doctors who are constituents, who would like to meet to put their views forward and this is being arranged for surgery next week.

"The reality is that very few junior doctors live in my constituency."

The MP posted a graphic on Facebook on Monday comparing the wages that doctors receive with that of the average Telford resident.

Ms Allan said her posts were presenting the views of her constituents and urged people living within her area to discuss the situation with her via email or telephone so she could ensure that she was only speaking with residents in her constituency.

She said: "There are serious concerns about the pay dispute which have been raised with me by people in Telford and it is right to speak out about those concerns.

"Facebook campaigners on any post will be from anywhere in the country and this is true of the doctors' pay dispute campaigners. It is not possible to identify constituents from Facebook comments, so constituents are always encouraged to email, call or write in.

"In the post on the doctors' dispute, residents were given a phone number to call if they wanted to meet."

Laura Croudace, a charity worker from Wellington, has joined with junior doctors to set up the Facebook group and gather together supporters to try and set up a discussion with Ms Allan.

Junior doctors took part in strikes on Tuesday and Wednesday last week in a row over pay and contracts that saw medics withdraw from emergency care for the first time ever. Emergency cover was provided by more senior doctors.
