Who should Ludlow's new roads be named after?

Four names of notable and well-loved people in a county town will be put forward to be immortalised with new street names.

Ludlow Town Council has asked for residents to make suggestions for street names in the town as hundreds of houses are set to be built in the coming years.

Four names have now been agreed to consider for new housing developments, among them that of town teacher Marjorie Wait, who died age 101 at the start of this year.

Dr David Lloyd, former mayor of Ludlow

The call went out after a resident wrote in suggesting the name of David Lloyd, former Ludlow mayor, councillor and historian could be used as part of the redevelopment of Ludlow's former Stone House council offices, which are hoped to be demolished and replaced with houses.

Gina Wilding, town clerk, said town councillors liked the idea in principle but when plans were submitted for the Stone House site Ludlow Town Council ended up objecting over the design.

"He was a historian and the design was kind of a historical pastiche which he would have hated, so it was not deemed appropriate," she said.

"But we decided we wanted to name a street after him, were something suitable to come up, and there are lots of houses planned to be built in Ludlow in the coming years."

Dr David Lloyd died in 2009 and has more than one memorial in the town already. His name has now been joined by others after a call for more suggestions went out at Ludlow Town Council's annual town residents meeting on Monday.

Ms Wilding said four names had now been flagged up for consideration.

She said the most popular, submitted by multiple people, was Marjorie Wait a very well known figure in the town who taught at Ludlow School for 44 years before retiring in 1975.

Marjorie passed away in January aged 101, and at the town council meeting meeting Ludlow Mayor Paul Draper said about 1,000 people had paid tribute to her in a book of remembrance since.

Another name submitted was that of Harry Peachey, a Rotary Club stalwart, fundraiser and Ludlow civic award winner who also ran a fruit and vegetable shop in the town for many years, who died in 2013.

The fourth name suggested was that of "Chalmers", a distinctive local family name.

"There have been Chalmers' in Ludlow for at least 300 years," Ms Wilding said.

"So the names we are considering are Chalmers, Lloyd, Peachey and Wait."

She said the names had been passed to the town council's representational committee, which deals with planning matters, to formally agree as official suggestions for new road names for housing estates to be built in the town.
