Whitchurch wants its own bull, just like at the Birmingham Bullring

It's already got its own Bullring – and now a Shropshire town is looking to replicate Birmingham by having its own bull.

The bronze bull in Birmingham is the centrepiece of the city's multi-million pound Bullring Shopping Centre.

And if it's good enough for Birmingham, it's good enough for the Shropshire town of Whitchurch, which also has an area called the Bullring. It plans its own cast iron version of the animal, standing six foot high and eight feet long.

Councillor John Ebbs, of Whitchurch Town Council, said: "It is a bit of history and we can put a board up to explain what it's all about.

"We can make people aware of the proud history of Whitchurch, which is currently lacking."

The bull would initially be loaned by the British Ironwork Centre, near Oswestry, for a year, with a view to extend its stay.

Councillor Ebbs said public response to the idea has been very positive. A place outside Boots has been identified where the bull could go and lottery funding will be sought to pay for its base.
