More frustration on fly-tipping as bed, mattress and microwave are dumped in Newport

This is the mess left behind in a Shropshire lane when fly-tippers decided to dump their rubbish in the road.

Published

The household mess was discovered by the Newport Safer Neighbourhood Team in a lane near Church Aston.

The team were on patrol when they found a wooden bed frame, mattress, microwave oven, cooking utensils and other general household items left along a lane running parallel to the A518 near to the Aston public house.

Pc Lee Thomas said: "Fly-tipping blights our area and is totally unnecessary.

"It costs all of us, as local council tax payers, an unneeded expense as the job then falls to the local council to clear up other people's mess.

"Not only that, but the items left on the roadside can contain any number of unknown hazards to passing vehicles, pedestrians or animals."

"Even though the local recycling centre in town closed, local town councillors say residents can benefit from a free bulk collection service from Telford & Wrekin Council if they are unable to take items to the next nearest tip themselves.

"People should be aware that even if they hire someone to remove refuse from their property, they must make sure the carrier is properly licensed.

"Should the items subsequently be dumped at the roadside and the council are able to identify where the rubbish came from, then that person may end up with a fine."

Anyone who comes across an incident of fly-tipping should report it to the borough council by calling 01952 384384.

The council also has a smartphone app for Apple and Android users called Everyday Telford.

This allows people to report a variety of issues including fly-tipping directly from the scene using their phone

This method also allows them to send the exact location of any rubbish dump scenes to the relevant authority.
